Let's Face Facts:

Food security is an issue embedded into our systematically racist and classist systems. In this country, Black and Hispanic households experience a disproportionate rate of food insecurity, in comparison to their white counterparts (feedingamerica.org). Currently, 1.5 million New Yorkers are experiencing food insecurity, including one in four children (cityharvest.org). Wage and wealth gaps, poverty rates, and food apartheids are just some of the deeply rooted structural inequities causing this disparity. To make matters worse, USDA.gov estimates between 30-40% of the food supply in the United States is wasted, causing far-reaching impacts beyond just the lack of food that could be feeding families, including land, labor, and fossil fuel energy losses.

What else?

In a world where clothing is overproduced at extremely alarming rates, with the fashion industry responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions (worldbank.org), we must ask ourselves how we can keep clothing more circular AND accessible. With some low-income folks turning to the affordable– but quite literally toxic– fast fashion, alternatives with the same affordability are begging to enter the conversation.

Join our community in combatting food and clothing security sustainably.

Imagine a New York that
fed and clothed itself.

Resource Guides

Disclaimer: Nothing New York strives to provide sustainable security resources for those within our community who are *low-income*.

If you are a member of our community who does not identify as so, but still would like to participate in this project’s mission, there are plenty of ways to do so without contributing to gentrification or marginalization.

Nothing New York is all about reducing the footprint of our community and this of course includes everyone of all income levels. If you aren’t low-income, ask yourself how you may reduce your consumption levels (a.k.a. buy less) and sustain what you/we already have.

This might look like rewearing or mending an outfit, shopping local and organic, organizing your own clothing swap with friends, donating your compost, having a conversation about how repeating an outfit is nothing to be ashamed of, meal planning, or volunteering at your nearest food bank or community fridge.

It also might look like *not* buying that new outfit, not consuming clothing unnecessarily at thrift stores in our lower-income neighborhoods, not throwing away your food scraps, or not falling for marketing that convinces you that you need to buy more.

Please see the following posts to learn more about ways anyone stay sustainable and benefit our community: Donating Food/Compost, Clothing Donation Centers, Join a CSAOnline Thrift StoresSewing/Mending, Clothing Swaps, and How to Natural Dye Your Clothes.
